Thanjavur Painting for a Cause: Art Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness at Chennai International Airport

Art has always been more than decoration – it is a powerful medium for storytelling, awareness, and social change. We believe that classical art can speak meaningfully to contemporary causes. One such moment of purpose-driven creation was our contribution to Breast Cancer Awareness (7th year of Pinktober) at Chennai International Airport, by India Turns Pink.

Blending Tradition with a Modern Cause

Tanjore painting, known for its rich symbolism, spiritual depth, and use of gold foil, has historically depicted divine and royal themes. For this initiative, we consciously adapted the traditional format to address a modern social cause – breast cancer awareness – while preserving the sanctity and authenticity of the art form.

The painting featured:

  • The Pink Ribbon, the global symbol of breast cancer awareness, representing hope, strength, and solidarity

  • The Indian National Emblem – the Lion, symbolizing courage, resilience, and national unity

Together, these elements conveyed a powerful message: strength through awareness and collective responsibility.

Concept Behind the Artwork

The idea was to create a visual that could instantly communicate awareness to thousands of travelers passing through the airport every day. The pink ribbon, delicately integrated into the composition, stood as a reminder of early detection, support for survivors, and respect for those who continue to fight the disease.

The Indian emblem lion, rendered in the Tanjore painting style with traditional detailing and gold accents, represented inner strength and the courage required to face health challenges head-on. By combining these two symbols, the painting bridged heritage art and public health advocacy.

Art with Social Responsibility

As artists practicing a heritage craft passed down through generations, we strongly believe that tradition must evolve with responsibility. This project reaffirmed our belief that classical art can actively participate in social causes, without losing its authenticity or depth.

Collaborating with Pinktober, an NGO dedicated to breast cancer awareness, gave this artwork a purpose beyond aesthetics – it became a symbol of empathy, education, and collective action.

A Legacy Beyond Canvas

This Tanjore painting was not just a commission; it was a reflection of our family’s values – using art to contribute positively to society. Over the decades, our work has adorned homes, temples, and institutions, but projects like this remind us that art can also heal, empower, and inspire change.

As we continue our journey as fourth-generation artists, we remain committed to creating art that honors tradition while responding meaningfully to the world around us.
